How much does Helium actually cost?

(Swordrond is me btw, for those of you unable to figure it out; my Firefox and IE browsers remember different passwords, and I often forget to use Firefox :S)

Not sure... Pretty expensive though considering one party cylinder isn't exactly cheap. But who in their right mind would spend $5000 on helium!

Anyway, I really like you idea. As far as I can see, your story is set further into the future, with this large scale chemical war etc. However fossil fuels still exist but are rare, suggesting your story perhaps takes place around 2070? Not sure.

My story will take place in 2010. The event will take place on the 1st of September, a date of specific religious relevance to the plot. Naturally, fossil fuels will still exist. However, those with the oil could charge significantly high prices because such fuels would be in great demand. Therefore, electricity would still exist.

I did have an idea and I want to know what you people think about it. Obviously with such a disaster, a large number of religious/anti-religious cults would arise.

One of these cults tries to unite and prevent a technological ressurection which they hold responible for the disaster in the first place. They see themselves as the 'cursed ones' and try to appease their God by destroying computers etc. They wear simple black robes and lead a crusade against technology attempting to make up for the human misuse of such a gift.

Any thoughts?

If that were the case, I think such a turn of society would shun all forms of technology and things that relate too... this being machinery, logic, education, etc.

Essentially, your whole society would become Amish where they rely on hard work, toiling the land, praising God, and blah blah blah. There would be massive witch burnings, massive witch drownings, and anyone caught performing adultry would have a big "A" burned into their forhead.

Yeah, the kind of place I wanna visit. Yikes!

What if your people begin to worship technology like some kind of Hethen God? That would make things a bit interesting.

I am trying to think of the appeal of such a race under such times. ie: with a dust cloud covering all the earth, and the only means of survival being technology. I can understand if there are a few hundred/thousand fanatics who cling to this belief out of sheer desperation for something to believe in. HOwever, if the technology is providing food to a hungry man, that man will not turn on that which feeds him.

I'm not sure wether or not you are going to integrate something into the use of technology. for examples a potential adverse reacion with natural fuels sources reacting poorly in the new environment.

Just my initial impression

No, I think that man will turn it on if it will feed him. How else would he get the fed?

LOL
