No matter what your boss/techer, or whoever is imposing a writing deadline on you says, inspiration is not commanded. It comes and goes like the rain.

Sure there are ways to draw it to you, and all these advices that have been given are great, but yet I will tell you of another.

Surely you may not always have the time to follow this advice, but when you can, I find it mostly affective.

When clouds are dry and there is no more rain, I find sports to draw inspiration back into the pool of thoughts. In my experience, an intense day of (that was mine, but you can find another sport) skiing, inspired me to write more than I had on an ordinary day.

Of course, when I sat by my computer upon my return, I was alone in a quiet house, with no one and nothing to disturb or distract me.

Another thing we have to keep in mind is when writing a story, one part may be more inspiring than another. Write what comes to mind first, than fill in the gaps. One marvellous thing about computers is you can start writing a story by its end and finish it with the beginning. Jog dow ideas, then knit the rest. Never be worried about the order of things until it is ready to be finished.

Like a tapestry, you build the loom, then fill the in-betweens.

Each has to find her own way of writing stories. I've just explained mine so that others may be inspired by it, should they find any truth for themselves in it.

Just yesterday I had a small case of this. I wanted to write a story different from my usual kind, one where Santa's put on trila for trespassing and stalking. I just couldn't get it to some out right.

Then I remember something I was working on a little but ago during my free time in school. I got the paper out and revised what I had and then mved on to write more. So far it's going great/

So sometimes, when you get writer's block, you simply need to work on something you've done before but haven't either finished or fully put asside yet.

The trick is to know thy self and choose one the appropriate methode to overcome the writer's block. Each block is also different. We must work them accordingly.

But when all options have been worn, getting out there and doing something completely different might help. After all, healthy body, healthy mind.

Magus, I did the same thing you did with going back to something unfinished. This helped me too. As soon as I finished I started on my next story and wrote 1200 words before I put it down for the night. It's turning out great. and the best part is that I didn't plan this story at all, so I don't know where it'll end. The characters are just pulling it along for me like they're alive.

Usually I think up a good plot and the characters fit into it, but this time I'm going purely character-driven without any plotting at all. I don't think I'll write this way often, but it's nice to know that if I can't think up a plot I can just write about characters doing stuff.

Same here. It makes for the most interesting story, on average.

The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book of all time. But Tolkien does not expand on the characters as much as I would like... as much as most authors would have. His epic is more plot driven due to this and his focus on the history and culture of the lands. It is a notable exception, wouldn't you say? Especially when I say it's Literature's Crowning achievement.
