Scifi and Fantasy Forum: Writer's Discussion: Problems with Writing:
Is this a stupid idea?
Is this a stupid idea?We have moved to new forum software and posting here is closed!
in my SF story i'm working on i was toying with the idea of having the main character have a daughter who is a redhead. now *my* future universe everyone is very interbred and since the redhead trait is recessive it is thus very rare. a small but violent and vocal socio-political economic group calling themselves the **(i don't know yet, but i'll think of something eventually)** are more or less redheaded nazis who are obscessed with preserving the 'redhead race' and abduct the aforesaid fire-haired persons 'for their own wellbeing' or somesuch. in short the main character and his eight year old daughter are always on the runfrom these people because they are not particularly fooled by hair dye. this would be a sort of a subplot and would not dominate the main plot.
If you use blonde hair instead, you can have some reference to the Holocaust and Hitler's dream of having an all-powerful Arayan Race, which happened to have blonde hair and blue eyes.
but thats been.......... done
I like the red hair idea. Red sticks out better and can be shown as a proper fiery mark.
well the tone is light hearted yet but frought with philospohical meaning (i intend to write the story as a series of short stories, each one a sort of mini adventure or parable, but not really... more like a tv episode i guess.) since there are no true bad guys since everyone is painted in shades of gray there are the redheaded mafia who are always lurking in the background
That actually sounds pretty cool. I say go for it. It sounds good to me, seeing now as what you're aiming for.
One thing to remember about red-headed people is that they tend to have a certain type of bone structure in common with each other. Robert Heinlein said he thought that they were related to cats... since the bone structure is so feline in most red-heads. Therefore, even with hair dye, they could still be noticed, so I think this could work indeed.
Really? I had no idea. I guess you really do learn something new every day. That would make sense how they could see through dye, like he mentioned before.
weird.... my gf/significant other is a redhead and she's rather bigboned, almost 6'1"! never struck me as a cat person or even catlike for that matter. she actually raises guide dogs and her personality strikes me as more canine than anything else.
Interesting. I agree that there's a common tendency in the physique of red-heads. But there are always exceptions and variations. Their family history may alter their physique despite being red-headed.
I never said that all match the Heinlein ideal, but only said that HE felt they were somehow related to cats in a very distant way...
I can see a common thread there. It is a common tendency, I believe. But tendencies are, after all, just tendencies. They are open to differentiation. (Spelling? Can I buy anybody's ability to spell words well?)
Actually, you did well there... all of the words you typed were spelled correctly. Oh, and my ability is not for sale at any price. I used to be totally unable to spell more than just the basics, but then when I got to 8th or 9th grade, a switch was flipped and suddenly spelling became clear and easy for me. Oh, and it's fun being able to make fun of people (tease, not be malicious) about their inability to spell, since I may very well have ended up the same way.
My spelling is improving more and more. My switch was flipped after eighth grade; which is, after they stopped testing me I started to do good. I was quite worried about differentiation. It didn;t look right to me and I was too lazy to look it up.
Exactly! The same happened with me. After they stopped testing the spelling, I could spell. Of course, if you misspelled words on a paper, you'd get a lower grade, but THAT is not a test...
I believe I will stay out of this topic. Let me know haw it turns out. *as he leaves he pats Firebrand on the shoulder*
We'll be sure to do just that.
