Posted By: Magus Oct 24, 2004 - 05:33 am | | This is not nessecarily so. People usually don't go out of their way to base characters on people they know, if it does happen it just kind of... happens, you know? It's pretty much a subcponcious process of blending together certain traits, features, flaws and mindsets, which create a character that resembles one or more people you know. Many times they aren't even based on those people, they're just similer. But this process works reguardless if you know one person or one thousand. You blend traits of people you see, or characters in movies, books and TV.

I'd recommend that you join Lycoria. It's a collaberative fantasy story in the Writer's Showcase. It is an engrossing story that also has helped improve my style greatly, and given me different ideas and concepts on my own 15 volume epic fantasy. I think that it would be a great place for you to experiment writing about elves, their attitudes and mindsets. But also to work on your characters and, as you said, making them real, fleshing them out and developing them. I think it could go a long way for helping you work through this problem of yours.
Posted By: Nynofae Nov 01, 2004 - 11:06 pm | | I had considered joining Lycoria, but I wasn't sure if I had the right to join and didn't have the time to get more info on it. I really don't go on the Net very often. I will look into it though, as soon as I can. You're right, Talisman, elves are stereotyped to be perfect and that's just what I don't think is right. Any being with thoughts and emotions, any being that is aware of its surroundings, is bound to have flaws of some kind. My characters are pretty much alive already and once I manage to find a plot and a way to put on hold all the other ideas buzzing around my head, I think the story should be fine--even though outstanding is what I'm aiming for. lol Right now, I'm fleshing out my world a little bit more and ideas, characters, and all that are just...flooding my mind. It's very hard to get down to actually writing anything down, though because I don't have much time by myself and I can't write when there too many people around. I'm too scared they'll look at what I'm writing and laugh. Moreover, my mother doesn't really like my spending too much time writing. It's not the writing part that bothers her, it's the fantasy part, she's a very down-to-earth, practical woman. Not that she's not a wonderful mom, she just thinks fantasy in general is very...childish. lol. Anyways, thanks again.

Posted By: Aldan Nov 02, 2004 - 06:38 am | | People who think that fantasy novels aren't based in reality need to look at reality with a bit more effort.
Posted By: Magus Nov 02, 2004 - 12:55 pm | | I agree. If you look at The Lord of The Rings you can see that point illustrated. While Tolkien denied its connections with World War 2 and fascism it can be seen, maybe unintentional or maybe coincidental. You can see similer connections in reading Dune.
Posted By: Nynofae Nov 17, 2004 - 03:16 am | | Yes, it's truethat there's always some reality in any fantasy novel. After all, we cannot write about what we are unfamiliar with. But there are many people like my mother who refuse to accept fantasy because all they see is magic and monsters and "unrealistic things". They don't understand that fantasy is much more than that and they'll never bother trying to understand.
Posted By: Magus Nov 17, 2004 - 03:55 am | | That's a sad thing. But I suppose it is possable to write what you're unfamiliar with. It won't be good, by a long shot, but I suppose you could write it. But I would never recommend it. It's really a sad thing when people view fantasy as such.
POSSIBLE POSSIBLE POSSIBLE!!! Anyway...all good advice. I was intrigued by your mention of Lycoria, and I went and found it. It is sorta like the RPs at a place like CouncilofElrond.com. However...I can't read the introduction thing. The "content blocker" on my computer (That's "porn blocker" by the way) won't let me read it. It cites "Drug/Alcohol use" as the reason. Do you know what that is? And could I join without reading the introduction?
Posted By: Magus Dec 24, 2004 - 09:01 am | | Sure you can. I don't know why it would be blocked. It doesn't make any sense. It only talks about certain backstory information; religious Gods, races, lands and kingdoms, some of what's happened before, things like that. Oh, by the way, we did start a new parallel adventure just recently. It'll probably be easier to join that, but any one is fine. We'd be happy to have more people. All you need to know is to have a brief description of your character before your first post and then just join in, kind of like a story. But only control your character, that's key. Later on post your character's descrption in the marked scetion by that name and then you can talk about the sory in the discussion. Welcome Aboard!
Cool! I'll hop right in... I've done similar things before, so I think I know how to do it right. Warn me if I'm messing up things.
