I'm sure that if people were immortal we would see very few people retire, and even then for only a short amount of time.

Yeah, I actually just watched something the other day where they were considering raising the retirement age for social security benefits... when I read this thread, it made me think of that.

Some good things about immortality in regards to a novel would be: The character could have grown in such a society and just never have experienced the death of others. Also, while some immortals who've not seen death may be reckless in action, still others would swing in the opposite direction, fearing permanent disability. With an immortal, being a quadrapelegic would be much worse than for a mortal, obviously. Also, while some would become unwilling to develop relationships with mortals, those who would do so would probably end up being quite cautious with them, because of the mortals' apparent fragility, and so their relationship difficulties could make good reading. These are just a few, but some thinking would bring up many more, I'm sure.

I agree. That would be interesting to include in a story. I would certainly read it, if done in the right way.

Fearing disability? More like fearing humanity itself. If I were immortal I probably wouldn't be able to watch thousandsof loved ones come and go. I'd just say, 'screw it' and detach myself from humanity. Then I'd probably go insane and try to find a way to kill myself and the gift of immortality would be more like a curse.
