In my story I have this crystal that is very rare. I need a name for it. Now the crystal itself doesn't have a "name" but the actual crystal substance needs to be named, such as a diamond or emerald are names. I'll worry about giving a proper name, such as the "Hope Diamond," later down the road.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Just take the Mendeleev table, poke your finger at any two elements at random, and combine them, eg. Chlorine + Lithium = Chlorithium

If that doesn't have the right ring to it, pick another two, until you get something that sounds right.

Or Chlorax, Glistrene, Alax, Jouragn, Mychandria? Am I getting close?

Heh, yeah, been trying to work that out myself.

I really wish I could use "Naquada" but of course that has been taken by the Stargate series. Such a cool sounding word. It really fits the mineral it represents.

You could call it a "stone flower" or a "rock tear" or even a "stone soul". It could help if you describe the crystal a little more.

You could use a Religious reference... I'm a fanatic for Religious reference. For instance, the "Metatron Ore" in the game "Zone of the Enders" is taken from the Angel Metatron, who is basically the Chancellor of Heaven.

Most minerals end in "-ite", so try stuff like "Voricite" or "Rahtzite" or something crazy like that. Final Fantasy 6 used "Magicite". Or you could go with the standard fantasy ore, Mythril.
