A bit of a change of subject here, but anyhoo.... I was just wondering if pirates are worn out yet. I mean, I guess the whole Captain Hook type thing is a bit old, but is a good riproaring swashbuckling adventure on the high seas with a bunch of guys who drink way too much grog and talk with awesome accents still worth it? What say you? Still fun or overdone?
Uber-powerful magic users are not necessarily a bad thing. In my world, the use of magic is very similar to using machines. Magic, in it's normal form, is very limited in its use. Simply because it works on a microscopic level and different results require different forms in the elements by specific intention. The really powerful stuff is contructed. It is a basic spell that, instead of being released, is tied to a word, motion, or object. Once the spell is tied, additional spells can be added by linking them to other words. In this way, chanting or hand motions can release a spell just the way someone can do it by inate skill. With motions or words, it is a one time use. When spells are tied to objects, it can be used indefinately but its complexity is beyond that of almost any living creature. The only race to make frequent use of this is the orcs since their knowledge of science allows them to make these contructs without having an inate aptitude to work magic. The more powerful the spell, the more links there must be in its contruction. An unschooled mage might use as many as a dozen steps to light a fire but a very powerful mage or a very knowledgable one would be able to do it in one or two, simply because they can make a much more complex pattern before they lost control of it. That's basically the way it works. I think I went a little off topic.

Write me a story about pirates (a good one) ... . . . . Yeah, I'm suffering from a caffine withdrawal, how could you tell?
I agree! Pirates are great! I can never get enough good pirate stories....

Posted By: Victrate Feb 11, 2004 - 02:26 pm | | That Captain Morgan guy IS a mighty fine fellow. Well, if everyone wants a pirate story, then does anyone have any good piraty resources? This thread has given me an odd urge to go out and buy a parrot and limp in a mysterious way while mumbling to myself, so resources would be great! If I find some I'll post them as well.
I have some decent sites on female pirates saved on my home computer - I'll try to post them later on tonight.
