Most readers aren't going to know where a name like "Sauron" comes from. Most won't care. And I don't want them to say either one of those things, "Some Idiot."

I think anyone can name their characters whatever they want. If it gets someones goat, that's too bad. Maybe their goat should learn to move a little faster and avoid predators.

Ehlana, you may not want your readers to think anything at all... I don't know. But they will, and you, as the writer, need to know that and should attempt to control it.

All names bring up impressions, you said (specifically in your criticism toward Eddings) that he uses names with Ks to make them sound rough as if that meant they were barbaric... they were, somewhat, barbaric in the story...

I guess I would call that mission accomplished for his intents and purposes.

Magus,

I think he chose Roland specifically because of the Song of Roland. I thought it was a good choice, and was actually pretty clever. I don't know if there other names were chosen specifically, and to be honest, I have only read the first two books in the series.

It was from "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" where he got it. It's also a character of his, I hear, from The Eyes of the Dragon.
