I read a book a while ago and one of the people interviewed for it was the guy who created Mario. He said that Mario looks the way he does because of the technilogical limitations at the time.

He was colored red primarily to be seperated from the background. He had a mustache so that people could tell he had a mouth and wore overalls so that people could see his shoulder movements.

But they never said anything about political affiliation... and it WAS made during the Cold War...
