I guess I'm a late bloomer when it comes to my first exposure to fantasy novels(and my fantasy writing, also).

When I first heard of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I thought, "That's gonna suck!! I'll never see that crap!!"

My friends and I used to joke about it like, "I'm gonna use my elf sword and kill you, evil fairy!!"

Yea, was I in for a surprise or what!!

So, then came New Year's Eve 2001, that would've made me a junior in high school. I was bored at home, and my sister decided to take my nephew to see a "Jimmy Neutron" movie. I thought, "I'm bored, so I'll go too."

I decided to see The Fellowship of the Ring!!

Oh my goodness!!! I was hooked!! It just killed everything I thought I knew about fantasy. The elves were in armies, and tall!!! The elf was laying people down with arrow after arrow!! The dwarf was kicking ass, too!!! My only notion of a elf were the short ones with the sparkly cheeks....but these were kicking ass in armies!!!

I thought, "Elves don't have armies!! This is frickin' excellent!!!"

I was a fantasy fan from then on. I am writing now, reading anything I can get my hands (Drizzt Do'Urden!!), I just have a whole new appreciation of it all.

It's funny how anime and children's books can cause that misperception to happen...
Of course, if you'd ever played Gauntlet, you'd know that Elves shoot food...
"Elf needs food, badly."
"Elf shot food."
Doh!

What do you mean anime has caused the misconception? I don't know of any anime that would have caused that.

What I'm speaking of is the Elfin-type of anime, with the short, huge-eyed pointy-eared green/blue haired characters. Are they called elves? No. However, to anyone who'd heard a description or read a children's novel, they'd recognize them as such immediately...

I don't recall seeing anything like that, but my anime viewing is sadly limited. The only true Elf-type characters I've seen have come from Record of the Lodoss Wars. I have seen pointy-eared characters... but no more elves. Maybe I could ask around about this.

See Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars. In it, the race is called by a different name, but humans often call them elves.
