Posted By: Nomad Jun 14, 2004 - 09:10 am | | I wouldn't doubt it.

If, -as I do- you believe that it is arrogant to even think that we are alone in this MIGHTY Universe, and that there are bound to be other sentient creatures in galaxies throughout it, then you have to give way to the fact that we are not the oldest sentient creatures within it also. A couple of zillion light years in from the outer edge of the every expanding Universe there will be other Galaxies, many many many zillions of light years away from our Milky Way, and if they are occupied by other sentient creatures, they will be ANCIENT in comparison to ourselves. There technology will seem god like to us, and probably so vexing in it's weirdness and complexity, that we wouldn't have a chance of even understanding it's basic principles. Nah I doubt we will be Universal rulers , we might get to be the ruler of our own Galaxy, but even that is doubtful, as I believe that there is other sentient creatures in our own galaxy which are older that ourselves. Also you have to think of how vulnerable we are in space as biological creatures, heck at the moment we don't even have effective shielding that last for any serious length of time in space protecting out space explorers, and we have to use proxy agents to do most of our work in space. Yeah I doubt very much that we will ever be THE RULERS of the Universe BUT I do think that we will one day live out in space just as easily as we do now on earth, and that we will meat friends and enemies. Hyperion the Despised.
I doubt we'll even escape this solar system, much less this galaxy. But if anything, there's a chance we could do a lot in this galaxy. I'd hate to think that humans could take over the universe. That would be disgusting, and I like to think that humans have limits.
Posted By: Aldan Jun 14, 2004 - 02:20 pm | | I, too, find the idea of humans ruling the galaxy as being disgusting, but my reasons for that may be different... 1) As humans are right now, and HAVE been, we can't even rule our own land and people with any sort of control, without resorting to totalitarianism, which inevitably results in rebellion or unhappiness, at the very least. 2) We humans tend to want to change things to fit what we (short-sightedly) want. We tend not to care what we destroy to accomplish this. 3) Humans seem to find "alien" things to be either fascinating or disgusting, depending upon tastes or ingrained attitudes (and by aliens, I am stating this about one race in another's society, not actual aliens from another planet). This, IMO, contains the seeds for disaster in dealing with the aliens, due to the extreme inconsistencies in regards to how they will be treated by the populace or by the government(s) of the Earth. 4) Religions. Similar to number three.
It seems like humans will destroy themselves and anything they've created of value long before we have the opportunity to master the universe.
