I know this probably sounds stupid, but not being able to remember one book and one story I read 25 years ago is driving me nuts.
The first one is a book about a soldier fighting a war on a moon, maybe ours. He winds up on the moon's planet, (maybe as a prisoner?), and throws his watch into a now-ancient construction project ditch, to be found later.
The second is a story, which contains an incredible stream-of-consciousness portion out of a dog's mind.
I'd really appreciate hearing if these sound familiar to anyone. Thanks!

Try City by Simak for the Dog one, although it doesn't sound quite the same.

No idea about the other one.
