I thought I'd start a discussion on Stargate because I think it's excellent.

For a start, I think the series is much better than the movie. That's not to say I didn't like the movie, because I did. It's just that the movie could have been so much better. The ending definitely seemed rushed. I mean, it's like when they were making the movie, they realised it was going too long and they'd better hurry up and make an ending! It also seemed to borrow ideas from other movies a bit. Apart from this, I thought the movie was good.

But the series, Stargate SG-1, is heaps better. The stories are fantastic, and the characters are great! If only they'd made the movie this good!

I loved the movie, and I love the series. Although Jack seems to have forgotten totally the personal demons which characterised the movie version. He never seems to dwell on them at all, which is a bit unusual. Richard Dean Anderson makes quite a good Jack though, less military and more maverick than Kurt Russell.

The show has stayed on track, though, still a lot of episodes about exploration and discovery; not every one has them fighting the Ga'uld (?).

Although I have always enjoyed watching the show, it wasn't until halfway through last season that I came to appreciate just how good this show could be. Now I'm waiting for the SciFi channel playback so that I can get the earlier seasons on tape.

One comment on the last episode "The Serpent's Venom". It seems that Apophis has really upped the ante with his new cloaking technology. One wonders if the Asgaard are even up to the task of tracking his ships.

I just started watching Stargate a year or so ago, but I really like it!

I never saw the movie, so I don't have that to compare it to.

I think the actors do a great job. I love the sense of humor on the show. And I love that the characters seem more human and down to earth than most scifi.

I do when I can...I really enjoy it. I used to have Showtime and watched religiously when it was first run. Then when I dropped ST it took a while for the syndicated to catch up (it was at least a half a season behind), then it moved times a lot on my station. Its all added up to it being hard to hard for me to keep up.

I like the characters a lot, and the main actors are all very good. That makes a big difference. Even though I don't catch every ep, I like that every ep is a nicely contained story even through there is a continuing arc that is helpful to know and follow. Unless I planned on watching something specific, my remote usually stops when it finds SG1.

I enjoyed the movie, but I think I like the actors more in the series. Inasmuch as the series basically continued from where the movie left off I don't really compare them too much. I just think of it as the "rest of the story".

:)hello:) This is my first post!! Saw the movie when it came ot inte ciema and loved it - then I watched Children of the Gods when it came out on video but wasnt very impressed. However I then watched a couple of episodes of SG1 and since then have been hooked. I live in the UK and desperately want a Region2 dvd boxset season 1 to be released.

One of my favourite eps is season 4 Window of Opportunity. It has some of the best comedy moments in the series but does also bring up Jack's past - he empathises with the alien archeologist but realises you cant change the past and just have to go on no matter the pain.

Apparently they have been given a green light for an SG1 movie to be released in cinemas (not straight to video) and filming should start October 2001.

I can't wait for season 5 and if anyone has heard any rumours as to when Sky are going to show it I would be very grateful for the info

I have now seen the movie and it was great to get a bit more history on O'Neil and Danial. But I still like the series actors better. To be fair, they have been given a great deal more to work with and I agree with you Master, it is a continuation of the story.

I like that each episode is more self contained than regular scifi. It made it easier to jump into the series and has in no way diminished my fondness for the show.

Hi All.

I too watch Stargate SG-1 religiously! I have Showtime, so I get the chance to watch both the "new" season and then the syndicated programmes too.

I loved the movie, so when I heard they were going to make it into a series I was thrilled. Of course, it started on Showtime, which I didn't have when it started. Now its great because I get to watch it Friday nights, Saturday afternoon (Unless there is some triple-damned sporting event on.) Then they rerun it once again on late Sunday, in case you miss it.

I too love the humour in the series. Mr. Congeniality Col. O'Neill. I always remember the episode when T'elc and Jack switched "bodies" and T'lec was set on shaving his head. Hee hee.

It is a great series, and I really look forward to seeing a movie with the TV actors.

I didn't care for Kurt Russell in the original movie one bit.

But, from what I have heard, this will be the last season for SG-1 (according to Showtime) so I have to assume that the syndicated show has another year, since they are behind.

Bummer. I hate it when that happens.

Oh well, just thought I'd add my 2 ducats worth.

:-)

I've just finished watching Singularity again - it's one of my favourite episodes. One of the things I like about SG1 is that although children regularly feature in the episodes they aren't there as the Wesley Crusher factor (i.e. to save the team).

Watching the series on Sky1 in the UK i get very annoyed with all the advert breaks - I really don't know how you stand it in the USA having far more breaks than we do. Thats why I like watching them (uninterrupted) on DVD or video.

Anybody else got a favourite episode, character or scene?

I do. It's an Amanda Tapping scene. It was in the second episode of the two parts of the spider story where Thor comes back to get Carter. But before that Jack was asking Carter if she wanted to go fishing and when he was looking through her magnifying glass and she looked up and smiled.. One of the cutets smiles I've seen ;) I'm not big on googling over tv chics, but she really caught my eye in that scene. I still think about that smile ;)

Also, that same scene was classic "jack" humor. "Yeah, sure, you betcha" ..

Love that show.

My favorite ep is the one where they switched bodies also. The actors did a great job nailing each others characters. One of the funiest eps I have seen.

And yeah Crowe, Tapping does have one of the best smiles on TV. Something warm and honest about it.

I have seen the movie and all the episodes in seasons 1-4. Great show, with good actors, I agree the series is better than the movie, on the other had another movie mignt be a good idea.

At least with stargate, we are not miles behind, over here in N.Z. In New Zealand it is a very popular show, so we are going to start see season 5 in about another week. The one Sci-fi show we are up to date with.

I could have told you sooner, sorry, but it just went out of my head.....

Well Suess and over NZers, as you know SG was taken off, and this was before the season ended...

And as you should know it is back on at 10.30pm this friday an hour later.....usual channel.....

look at this I see a bad tread.....the show is now on two hours later than when it first start out....it looks like the network wants to do away with the show......This may be the end of SG for NZers......

oh well :(

at least we got seven seasons......
