hmmm...just struck me, maybe I'd better set up sub-topics for Firefly. Sounds like several of us are going to be watching, yes?
Posted By: ZimNova Sep 21, 2002 - 08:02 pm | | OK Master, I posted this; Quote:"Well I for one liked Firefly's Premiere. I thought the cast worked well together for a new show. We all know watching most new shows, say Enterprise, that it takes time for a cast to "gel". What I really like so far is the original concept that these coloney worlds are just scraping by on whatever technology they can scrounge up. No "everything bright & shiney in the future" stuff here. Sure they have space travel and there is an empire but on the colonies they have yet to build the huge industrial base that would be neccessary to support "modern" cities, thus the back to the dirt wild west atmosphere. They use "slug throwers" instead of PPG's or beam weapons and unlike the Trek universe these are still Humans with the flaws that Humans possess. Firefly has a campy feel to it which in a way reminds me of a show I liked a few years ago called *The Adventures of Brisco County Jr* that was also a sort of Sci-Fi Western. Brisco was always good for a laugh because it never took itself too seriously".
At the shows official web site; Firefly to counter some of the criticism being leveled at the show because of it's "Wild West" format. As I mentioned above I believe these colony planets are a bit backwards because they are seperated from the *Allience* after the civil war and it's not strange to see chickens running around , or cows because these are a *low tech* source of food. People living on a colony world would have to get by by roughing it, growing what they can and using what ever resourses were at hand. There is no way they can *fly in* everything they need. There would have to be *seed* resources like live game animals and crop plants that can reproduce on the planet to provide food. Building houses from native woods etc. It has always cracked me up that in so many Sci-Fi series' everything was futuristic *ready made* without the industrial or farming base [mines, factories etc.] to produce or support that level of civilization. Not here, we are back to the basic *live on the land* concept. Will this work as a Sci-Fi series, we'll see. ZimNova

Posted By: Nomad Sep 22, 2002 - 04:09 pm | | Awww Man! I missed it. John Doe also. Anyone know if they will repeat the premier some tome timesoon?
Posted By: ZimNova Sep 22, 2002 - 10:05 pm | | Nomad, it looks like Firefly will only be on once a week at least here in Boise but as Fox is a network it's probably the same where you live. Thing is Fox pulled a TNT [spit] on Joss Whedon and *The Train Job* was never intended to be the premiere episode. He has a two hour pilot in the can which will be aired in Dec. according to folks at the Firefly web site. That pilot ep. called *Serenity* deals with how this diverse group of people came to be aboard the Firefly class freighter. Supposedly the suits felt that *Serenity* did not have enough action for a premiere. Sound familiar? Once again they treat we fans like little kids who wouldn't like an expositional story over an action adventure story. That does explain though why the ensemble works so well together....because thay have already been working together for a couple of months in The Train Job! ZimNova
LOL! Typical network crap! Great, now when they show the two hour movie its going to seem weird to be seeing them all get together after we've been watching them for a couple of months *sigh*.
I've enabled subtopics and set up an episode area like we have for Enterprise.

Posted By: Nautilus Dec 12, 2002 - 06:26 pm | | Bump. I had my reservations about a "western" themed science fiction (or is it a space opera? ;-) show, but I find myself rushing home whenever it's on. The episodes seem to be getting stronger as the season unfolds and I do hope it lasts. I heard one opinion that it was picked up for a full season and one that it wasn't looking good after whatever episodes air in Dec., so I don't know who to believe. Anybody got news?
Posted By: ZimNova Dec 12, 2002 - 07:39 pm | | Nautilus. Bottom line is everything is up in the air right now. The series has been picked up for 2 additional episodes which brings the current total to 15 counting the "Pilot" [2 hour] which is to air on Dec. 20th on Fox. After that from what I've heard they will air 2 more ep.'s then go on hiatus through Jan. and may return in Feb. The good news is the show has not been officially cancelled. The "hiatus" can mean anything. Hopefully Fox will see that they have a hit here with Firefly but one can never tell in the market with mind numbing sit-coms, an endless parade of non-reality reality shows and countless clone cop & hospital shows which draw all the ratings. Sheep want normal and Firefly ain't normal. ZimNova
Posted By: Azziz Dec 14, 2002 - 09:43 am | | Well, it is official, the show has been canceled. *sigh* The only not gloomy side is that Fox is allowing Joss to show it around to other networks. They are not holding onto the rights.
Posted By: ZimNova Dec 14, 2002 - 12:22 pm | | Yeah I know, it stinks. Thing is I believe there is little intelligent life left in America. I was watching Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" the other night and he asked some gal [twentysomething]; "What 2 countries border the United States?" and she didn't have a clue, then he asked her; "Who's Moby Dick?", again no frelling clue. So he asked; "Where do Welsh people come from?". Blank 'deer in headlights' stare. So he asks; "What is Shamu?". Tha Da...."A Whale" she answers. And Welsh people come from?....confused look. When the question was; "Who are the Olsen twins?" she knew right away??? I have no idea who the Olsen twins are but I'm guessing they have something to do with popular entertainment? We're doomed. Posted By: Bmat Dec 14, 2002 - 12:29 pm | | I was so sorry to hear the show was cancelled. I think it's been getting better and better as the actors get more comfortable in their roles. Those bits by Leno are hilarious- and sad. If I remember correctly the Olsen twins are those two girls who were on a sitcom- something like "full house"? When they started they were the cutest babies. They've been in at least one movie since, and I think there are toys of them.
Posted By: Nautilus Dec 19, 2002 - 06:17 pm | | Aww...bummer. I do hope it shows up somewhere but who could pick it up?
Posted By: Nautilus Dec 19, 2002 - 06:30 pm | | Oooops---took a quick peek at the official site's boards. If it's UPN, where could they put it?
Posted By: Sindatur Dec 20, 2002 - 05:35 am | | Push Twilight Zone off to another night (as far as I'm concerned they could drop it from the schedule, but I believe it's getting good ratings) and pair it with Enterprise on Wednesday night. If you look back in this thread, someone mentioned it would be nice to see it paired up with Enterprise.
Bummer. I was really enjoying Firefly, too! Cripes, why is it that every decent series is getting the axe? First our beloved Farscape, now Firefly. I guess like Zim said, "Sheep want normal and Firefly ain't normal." At this point in time...what IS normal? I saw the "Jaywalking" segment on Leno with the stoopid people. My goodness, how dumb are these young people? Don't know what 2 countries border the US? I guess this is a sad commentary on our culture. Sadly, more emphasis is put on sports, money and violence than history and the basics. I guess I'm weird, but I always enjoyed history and geography...still read history to this day. Makes me nervous. Explains, tho, why Geo. Bush is so popular. Dumb and dumber.
Posted By: ZimNova Dec 21, 2002 - 02:27 pm | | Tim posted this heartfelt story today at a Buffy site. I thought you all might enjoy it as much as I did.
Quote:Tim Minear - Dec 21, 2002 3:12:12 am EST "Well, I told you so. Yes I did. And for those who are wondering if maybe we reworked the pilot -- for certainly what you saw can't have been what Fox insisted was too "slow and uninvolving," thereby putting the stink of failure on the show before we ever had a chance to air an ep -- not so much. Joss added the battle scene at the top of the ep, added one or two lines of clarification, but by and large -- yep. That's what Fox didn't want us to air. By-the-by... after Joss added the battle scenes and tightened throughout and basically answered any problems the network could have had with "Serenity"... from what I understand they never even looked at it. The choice had been made. Stick it on a shelf. I think that was probably a mistake. What a strange week. Two and half days into my eight day shoot (I was directing) for this last episode, they cancelled us. Joss and I were still writing the script. It had been our latest-latest. One large reason for the not being finished: the not knowing. Made it somewhat difficult to concentrate. So I was, as is often my custom, making it up as I went along. Once the other shoe dropped, it was almost a relief. I only mean that in the torture-is-the-not-knowing sense -- after being treated so shabbily for so long. But we returned to work on friday, finished the scene we'd left dangling the day before (we wrapped early the moment the news came down), and somehow mushed through until today. Nathan came up to me that day after and said, "I thought it would be really hard to get through today. But I had so much fun." We all did. Today was kind of a bummer. I finished shooting my episode yesterday. We shot a gigantic flashback battle scene with Mal and Zoe. It was great fun. But today was a day for pick-ups and added scenes for episodes nearing completion and some small reshoots. Part of that was pieces of a montage for "Heart Of Gold." Alan, Sean, Summer and Jewel wrapped out yesterday (at the end of the night I had one group shot of the entire cast walking together. I finally got it after they quit goofing off for twenty minutes, breaking the crew up as they did "model runway walks" complete with turns and snaps. I have that on film. I knew it was likely the last time the entire cast would be together in a frame of film. Maybe ever. So that was kind of wonderful. And kind of sucked) Morena, Gina, Ron, Adam and Nathan worked today. Anyway, one of the sets was a small rebuild of a tiny portion of a larger set from the aforementioned "Heart Of Gold." Each character had a shot or two for this montage. I brought in Gina, we shot her shot, then the AD announced, "that's a "Firefly" wrap for Gina." When an actor, usually a guest actor, finishes his or her last scene in an episode, that is what happens. The AD (assistant director) announces, "That's an episode wrap for so-and-so." Doesn't happen with regulars. But it did today. Gina got a long and loving round of applause from the crew. She said many warm and wonderful things. We hugged. She left. Then I brought in Ron. Same thing. "That's a "Firefly" wrap for Ron Glass." Ron couldn't speak at first. He finally said, "I didn't know it could be like this." He thanked everyone and talked about what a special experience this had been for him. We applauded some more. After many hugs, Ron left. The AD called for "the next victim." I was starting to hate this ugly little set. These unexpectedly generous, grateful actors would come in to it, and that would be all. "That's a "Firefly" wrap for Nathan." Nathan thanked everyone. For about the ten millionth time. Adam was brought onto the set. He lit a cigar, held up a gun. Smiled. That was the shot. Adam's last shot. "That's a "Firefly" wrap for Adam Baldwin." Adam thanked everyone. He said no one ever let him be funny before. He was grateful for that. He said he was glad everyone seemed to appreciate what a really exceptional experience our time had been. He was glad that it wouldn't have to be regarded as such in retrospect, but that the gratitude was of the present. Adam and Nathan hung out until Morena shot her scene. Nobody wanted to leave. "That's a "Firefly" wrap for Morena." She said it was the best job she'd ever had. Not that she'd had a lot of jobs, she said. She doesn't want it to be over. None of us do. Then I packed up my things. Shook hands. I drove off the lot. I got home. Turned on the TV. And they were finally airing the pilot. That's a "Firefly" wrap." edited by Tim Minear on Dec 21, 2002 3:19:39 am EST
