Scifi and Fantasy Forum: Sci-Fi and Fantasy General Discussions: Does anyone know how to roleplay?
Does anyone know how to roleplay?
We have moved to new forum software and posting here is closed!
PLEASE BOOKMARK THE NEW FORUMS
I recently bought D20 Modern but can't find anyone in my area who plays RPGs. Could someone pity me and tell me is there any online places that teach you how to play RPGs?
I have Game Mastered for 7 years id be happy to help teach you, send me a email at dariendreamwalker@yahoo.com and we can go from there, also try a web search at google for D@d rules and you should find quite a lot of useful sites.

I've done everything from basic D&D to AD&D to 2nd Ed to, now, the first version of 3rd Ed of that venerable game. I've also done a bit of Star Frontiers, Gamma World, Shadowrun, Battletech, and a few others... though, as I've said, I haven't been able to play any of them with anyone else in a considerable amount of time - I live in a huge area, but I travel by bus and it can be tough to get home after a gaming session... *Aldan mopes*

D&D,Ad&d,T&T,Metamophosis Alpha, and Traveler. Most of my RPG playing was with pencil paper and dice. I Liked travelers system most. Most applications of the experience point systems were unsatifactory. I liked that Traveler did not use them.
I've played D&D second edition and Call of Cthulu. I didn't really like Call of Cthulu, as it's rather dark (as you can imagine - lol), but I did like their rules system. I loved D&D, though.

Posted By: Aldan Mar 24, 2004 - 03:40 pm | | "T&T". Tunnels & Trolls?? COOL!! I'd forgotten about that one!
It's set in the 1920's era, which was kind of neat, but the psychotic evil monsters made it a little grim for my taste.
Posted By: Aldan Mar 25, 2004 - 02:29 pm | | Now, when you speak of learning to roleplay, are you speaking of the rules and such, or are you asking how to actually roleplay? I know that little kids roleplay all the time (at least the ones I know do...) - they become parents, or astronauts, or cowboys, or professional athletes, or whatever. You'd probably do well to watch them if you don't understand roleplaying. However, if it's a problem w/ rules, the easiest way is to learn to actually PLAY it first, and then learn to GM it later. I know that you really need that general rules basis to be able to interpret the more specific rules and how and when to apply those rules as a Game Master. I must say, though, that your best bet would be to use Google to search the web for other people who're using the D20 Modern system, since just about anyone who roleplays is now using the internet to either brag or to discuss experiences and problems encountered in play.
I want you to know that several really bad jokes have occured to me regarding role-playing throughout the course of this thread. However, they would not be pg-13, so I have I refrained from making any of them. Bmat, I hope you appreciate the immense amount of restraint I've shown in this particular instance

Posted By: iamume Mar 25, 2004 - 05:26 pm | | Player vs GM. I was a michievious player and brutal GM .I also favored developing a weak character into a strong one.Super characters were no challenge. And the troll was pacified with a bowl of steaming cabbage. A stimulating exerisize in imaginative yoga. I enjoyed reading that Hindus include all studies into one form of yoga or another.Science being Raja Yoga.
My favorite character had a wisdom of 5
Posted By: Aldan Mar 26, 2004 - 12:02 pm | | Those, now, are REALLY fun. I had one which I rolled up for Basic D&D that had a very high intelligence (17) and a very low wisdom (4). This led to all sorts of fun... ...such as finding out something important and then telling it to the wrong person/in the wrong person's presence. My character would be going along with his group (who were trying to stay silent) and just start talking about something which'd just come to him. Of course the ones who'd hear and come running were nearby... Oh, and then there was the misuse of spells...
Posted By: Shudder May 07, 2004 - 09:22 pm | | Re-awakening a thread with a reference to the post around mid-March: There are a number of sites that will advertise their systems, but you have to "buy before you try." My recommendation is that you either find a group of players in your area by checking the yahoogroups(can I say that?)-type sites that host roleplayer lists or online games, then asking where some of its members are and whether they still table-top, or go to a local gaming/comic shop and ask to put up an ad, "Looking for game, any fun system." There are a couple of sites online that will show you some of their systems, but I won't post site addresses unless the mods give me the nod; that would, in a sense, be advertising :scream:. Another good hint might be to try a broad search for "RPG character sheets," or just "character sheets." Chances are if you dig the sheets and can visualize the system, you will like it; but find a group that uses it or is willing to try before you drop $100 on books, sheets and supplements. They're just so EXPENSIVE these days! G'night.
Posted By: Shudder May 07, 2004 - 09:30 pm | | ah, and saw the reference to Call of Cthulu. Let me say this, "eeea eeea, eaaah Cthulu." Easily one of the best systems ever written. Too bad it got d20'd like everything else that was popular in a different system. . . .Traveler. . . :shudders: there's one I haven't seen in a while. Even the character sheets in my folder are a little dusty. Dungeons and Dragons, like GURPS and White-Wolf, are old stand-bys of excellence in gaming. Only one, however, uses the d20 system. Too bad about White-Wolf, or Black Dog, or World of Darkness, or Frisky Fruit-Loops or whatever else they call themselves today. A good system only lasts so long as the writers maintain a grip on their vision, and this one definitely had vision, early on. The loss of Bradstreet was one of the harbingers of its doom. Heard he is coming back, along with some of the original writers, for Requiem. Hope it doesn't turn out to be some more of that 3rd Edition crap. Laters.

One thing I'd also suggest is not only posting something at a local shop, but also speaking with the people behind the counter there, asking what they would suggest for a beginning gamer. They generally work there not just for the money (I mean, minimum wage?!?) but also because they LOVE to play. Therefore they should know what would work well for a beginning player, and often won't be just acting as salespersons (oh, how I hate PC!).
