Posted By: Nomad Apr 07, 2003 - 01:02 pm | | Hmmmm...How is this for obscure...Horror isn't necessarily Scifi...But some Scifi can be Horror. Guess it really depends on thae actual story, eh? I always considered Horror to be like the old Werewolf, Frankenstein and Mummy movies. "Them" is a goos one to...but that could be scifi also.
Posted By: RongFo Apr 07, 2003 - 01:32 pm | | RF: checks the wind, balances the pair of pennies in his hand, shouts "Fore!" IMOSHO, horror is to sf as fantasy is to sf. There are a lot of ideas about what sf is, but the general consensus is that it deals with "what is" and adds an element of "what if," with the caveat that the "what if" has to be grounded in plausible science. Fantasy is generally seen as the "what if" without the constrictions of "what is." Most horror actually fits quite easily into the genre of modern fantasy ("what is" with a completely implausible "what if" ) but even that is a stretch.

Posted By: Bmat Apr 10, 2003 - 10:38 am | | I don't know, Raistlin. The only posts I delete without notice are spam. We did lose a day of data on the last major site down time. Could that be it? Is the post still up? I'm not getting it even with copy and paste. Thank you for the alert. I'm at a loss about the other problem too. You can try the Master, although he seems to not be able to come to the site very often. Master@speculativevision.com My addy is bmat@speculativevision.com, but I don't have control over technical problems.

Hyperion out!
Posted By: Cyrus Apr 21, 2003 - 08:30 am | | The genres are very likely grouped because they are all Speculative Fiction. I usually find the mystery near at hand as well.
I find the basic difference between horror and fantasy/sci fi is the gratuitous use of almost pornographic violence. A lot of horror authors dwell on every detail of a horrific killing with such ghoulish relish that I find myself feeling almost ill not at the prose itself but at the thought that this is supposedly entertaining.
Posted By: RedRosa May 26, 2003 - 01:14 am | | I don't think Horror and Sci-Fi are one single genre, but you can mix both and get great results. Alien is a horror movie in a sci-fi context; Dark City has some glimpses of horror too, and it's really sci-fi. I always found horror to be microscopic/personal, and sci-fi macroscopic/universal. Horror is usually played at the level of single individuals - look at Alien again: it's sci-fi, but it gets the horror from concentrating on a few group of people, rather than a whole world or galaxy. The level of danger is far more personal, so we feel their fear. Sci-fi can involve whole worlds and gallactic empires, and the threat of danger of a whole world being snuffed by an alien armada doesn't rise so much fear as a single alien killing people inside a ship in space. Anyway, those are my miserable two cents
I have recently discovered that I have a taste for *some* horror books..but hardly at all for such movies?? Is it the sight of such things that appalls me?? *Perdito Street Station* the cyber punk/horror book by China Mi'eville..I found it intriguing and his style outstanding..Although I had to go for something a little lighter to read to rest up from the intenseness of this book. It was back to Anne McCaffrey..I have read about 25 of her books in the last 18 months. Brawne
Posted By: Hyperion May 26, 2003 - 02:59 pm | | Yeah me to BrawnLamia I tend to like the Thriller-horror stories more than true Horror. A good spooky thriller is a fine read as far as I am concerned In my local Waterstones bookshop, the Horror section is situated directly beside the Sci-Fi section, and often the two books of those genres get mixed up, and I often have a grummble to myself as I catch a rather rubbishy Horror book in the glowing Sci-Fi section Sometimes however the two genres do meat, and blend quite well into one story. There are quite a few good and ad examples of Sci-Fi-Horror out there if one looks hard enough. Hyperion out PS:::::I like your Nick also BrawnLamia :::::: :::Tell me, do you carry an antique pistol around with you as your name-sake does? :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
LOL.. nope sorry Hyperion..I just really liked the books and the name.. I am more of a peace advocate where as the original Brawne.. was not.. by way far..
Posted By: Ding_man May 26, 2003 - 05:34 pm | | Ok now my 2 cents. My opinion is the same as a lot of the others. Horror, scifi, and fantasy are all very similar. It just has some detail that you can find unbelievable. But there is an exception to human murder horrors.
