And yes, now that I've read the stuff from 2002, I remember that she's a Noldor and that the "Non-Valar wood elves were dark elves (I'd thought that they had an official term for them, but...). I just couldn't remember the terms. I haven't had my LOTR novel since I loaned it out and the person just kept it (and yes, I did say "novel", since it's the trilogy compiled into one gorgeous hardcover book), and my Silmarillion was stolen from my storage locker, along with my original LOTR and Hobbit, which I'd gotten from my father. *Aldan misquotes that famous line from The Planet of the Apes: "Get your hands off my stuff, you [Aldan pre-censors this word to save Bmat or the website the trouble] dirty apes!"*

My Theory was that Legolas was a bastard. There is no mention of his mother in any of JRR's writings. At the council of Elrond, he is describes as "a strange looking Elf in brown and green". It sounds like they have never seen him before. I would think that an elf prince would be well known. Aragron introduces him as just "an elf". There is no big deal made of his lineage.
Just my thought. :)

Here's a question from a new user. Has anybody else any opinions on Thranduil's treatment of his son? Why is Legolas, being yet the prince of Mirkwood, his father's messenger in a land that was most likely not safe to travel? And why was he obviously one of Gollum's guards (by the way he speaks of it)? Nobody told Thranduil that Gollum was an important captive, so why was Legolas, himself, assigned the duty of guarding the creature?

I thought Gollum's guards were slain, so how could he be Gollum's guard? No, I think that generally the elves of Mirkwood would know quite a bit about Gollum, being their strangest prisoner, and Legolas, being an important elf (For some reason that term makes me laugh) would know even more about Gollum, and the conditions of his captivity.

I didn't read all of the stuff in the back, but I'll sing my tune none the less. I apalogize if what I post has already been said.

Legolas is the son of the king of Mirkwood Forest.

End post.

The reason would be political. Elrond is the "king" (if you will) of the elves (all "high elves";) of Rivendell. Thranduil is the king of the wood elves of Mirkwood (they were not "high elves";). The reason that Thranduil sent his son was the same one that Denethor sent his heir Boromir - politics. If you want to make sure that your point is made clearly, you will be sure that you show that (in the case of Minas Tirith) things are desperate enough to risk the heir apparent to send him to seek aid, or, in the case of Legolas, Thranduil, he was being apologetic to Elrond and Gandalf for the loss of Gollum and showing that what was happening in Rivendell was of prime importance to him.

Sorry about the winks. If you do a quote sign next to a close parenthesis, then it will automatically wink at you. *sigh*

Just put a space between the two. That's what I do and it works. It's ok though. We still like you in spite of you flaws... or maybe because of them.
