Here is a comment that I received in an email: "She just turned 93 years old this month, and she is (I believe) the oldest living author of science fiction and fantasy. She started writing in the 1930s and quickly assumed an androgynous pseudonym to get past objections to female pulp writers (her birth name was Mary Alice Norton). ... The impact that Andre Norton has had on modern science fiction literature, movies, and television is incalculable. Most people probably know that the "Beast Master" movies and the television show were LOOSELY based on two novels she wrote (THE BEAST MASTER and LORD OF THUNDER). ... Long before there was Star Trek, Andre was publishing militaristic science fiction stories about a future space-faring civilization spanning many worlds and species. Long before there was The Time Tunnel and other time-travel books, Andre was publishing stories about the Time Traders and the Forerunner civilizations. Long before there was The Time Tunnel and other time-travel books, Andre was publishing stories about the Time Traders and the Forerunner civilizations. Long before there was Stargate-SG1, Andre was publishing a series of novels about people who travel through gates to other worlds. Long before there were the TSR novels and other game world novels, Andre wrote QUAG KEEP (based in the World of Greyhawk). ..." The latest that I hear is that Andre is home under hospice care.
