Hi,

I read a book in 1993 while traveling the US by train and i accidently forgot the book on a train one night. I never got to finish it, and it has been bugging me since then...

A guy in Michigan gave it to me to read on the train, an I never took notice of the author unfortunatly.

Maybe someone can help me figure out the author or maybe the title of the book.

It's been a while, so my details might be abit fuzzy.

The things i remember is the following.

The lead character was an outcast from his hometown.
He had regenerative powers, couldn't be killed. Chop of an arm, it would grow back. I believe it started with him beeing imprisoned on a ship at sea. (Not 100% sure though)

Through his travels he adapted alot of powers.

He could speed up/slow down time.
I remember him meeting the people who taught him that, and they had a "statue" in their village, it was a lady that slowed down time so much for herself that she was like a statue, she had been like that for a loooong time.

I believe that he learned to either talk to or travel through the earth.
If I am not misstaking, he could "sink into" the earth and travel through it.
If he fell from a cliff, earth would "catch" him.

I know these are vague details, but i am hoping someone can tell me what the book is... I really want to finish it.

True, I was 12-13 years younger, but i remember that i was captured by the book, and this is the only book i never finished!

If possible, please send me a mail!

Thanks!

-Patrik

Lol I hve been searching for your book but I need more concrete key words... ANYTHING!! A name would help TONS! A certain word that you are SURE occured in the story. What made you remember the story? what is the general plot? All this info would make it easier to find it! Rack your memory Patrik!

Was there swearing in it?
Sex?
Violence?
There has to be one main thing that you remember about it...
What about the story made you remember it for so long? Be specific!

Hmm, let me see..
It's hard to remember after such a long time.

I can't remember any name unfortunatly.

One passage involves him learning the earth thing.
I remember him standing on a cliff in a desert and just falling backwards. Earth was supposed to catch him.

One other detail is that a friend of his was about to be pierced by an arrow, but he speed up his time so that he could catch (or turn) the arrow away from him.

He was also the only one that could slow down time as much as the lady "statue". He talked to her, and if i am not misstaking, she has slowed herself down that much since her husband or child either died in an accident, or was killed.

I also believe that he made her return to normal time and that they fell in love.

Something tells me that the leade character was from a nobel/royal family.

He might have been thrown of the ship, or there was an accident and he got of it that way. I believe he was caged on the ship also.

I'll try to remember more.. though it isn't easy. The time since i read it, and me not having english as my native language (beeing from Sweden) makes it abit harder for me to understand.

Thanks for trying to help! :)

Actually, I think it was the writing and the "trades" he learned through his travels. I believe he was searching for something to explain why he was the way he was.

When I am thinking more about it, I believe the guy that gave me the book said something about him beeing from an alien world or something like that. That the ending would surprise me.

Thats what has been bugging me all these years, since i never got to finish it.

It wouldnt surprise me if there is a spaceship at the end since the guy who gave me the book was really into that sorta thing.

Unfortunatly the guy who gave me the book passed away shortly after I left Michigan in a car accident, poor guy, so I can't contact him either. :(

:) I found it through another forum!
The book is called: "A Planet Called Treason" and is written by Orson Scott Card.

I've ordered it and it will arrive next week!

Thanx for the help!

That's exciting, ShadoWind! Congrats on your success! I'd be interested in hearing if the book is all you remembered. :)

ORSON SCOTT CARD!?

No wonder you remembered it all this time, that guy is good!

I have actually e-mailed a couple book sellers, but they did not know what book it was.

It turned out that the book was out of print, but my local bookseller contacted the publisher and they had a handfull of books left :) So I managed to get one!

Well for goodness sake! We have a copy in hardback! I am pretty sure, though, that I have never read it. I'll try to start it today.

I just checked out Amazon.com. They have several used copies. The reviews talk about a revision called "Treason" in which some language was made more appropriate. The book is described as Card's second and not his best.

Right. I used to have both versions (Treason and A Planet Called Treason) of the novel, but your description eluded my synapses. I'm sorry.

I started A Planet Call Treason last night. I had read it before and liked it. The protagonist belongs to a family that grows extra body parts that are harvested and that also heals very quickly. It is such an odd story that I almost stopped reading it this time. Since I've forgotten the end of the story though (don't tell me) I am now caught by the mystery and have to finish. It is well-written.

The title of this thread will be changed to Orson Scott Card so that others will know what it is.
