When I was in seventh grade our teacher read this book to the class and it really amazed me. Everything is so vivid, and symbolism so prevalent. The characters are great too, more lifelike and developed than in most books. And on top of all this, it is fantasy - fantasy that defies the stereotype. No elves, dwarves, or dragons. Yet the magic is there.

It begins with the young boy Harvey, who is being devoured by the great gray beast February, and from there it expands into another world. Harvey, like many children before him, finds himself under the care of the mysterious Mr. Hood. But behind the surreal paradise of Hood House is a dark secret, and Harvey must unravel it before he falls prey to the thief of always.

Hmmm... Sounds interesting. I think I will inquire further about the book.

I loved this book. I read it as an adult, and found it strangely disturbing.

I agree with Gnollslayer about the vivid descriptions. The book stayed with me for a long time after I read it, and I went back and reread it recently.

It's by one of the acknowledged masters of dark fantasy or Horror, Clive Barker
