I agree that there should have been a few extra minutes in the movie to explain the Maruaders connection, and the map, and the animagi all in a Scooby-Doo fashion. But, after watching the movie numerous times, it is almost all there to pick up on, you just have to be a really careful viewer to put it all together. Some folks believe it was left a little ambiguous to be picked up in GoF, although that doesn't make sense to me, as GoF will have it's own problems with being trimmed, as the book is twice as big as PoA. So be prepared for this one to be quite different. No Dursleys (not a loss to the plot of GoF, I think), so no Ton Tongue Toffee (Bummer, but, only due to losing the humor, not important to the plot really). If they're wise, they won't make a big deal out of a quidditch game this time, all three movies so far have used alot of time for Quidditich "Action", which while being at the games is important, the character interaction at those games is more important than the fluff of the game itself (Keep it in the background while concentrating on the characters in the foreground, so we can have both) Alfonso Cauron refused to do PoA and GoF back to back because of Post Production on PoA and Pre-Production on GoF overlapping, but, last I heard he was open to come back for OotP or movie 6 or 7. When did you hear Alfonso had refused to do any more Potter flicks?

But, yes, I agree with what should and shouldn't be in Goblet of Fire. If only for time purposes the Quiiditch World Cup and The Dursley's should be cut out. Goblet of Fire is my favorite Potter Book. I hope they do good on this one. Personally, I don't think Chris Columbus should take the directorship again. I just don't care for him so much. He's enthusiastic, I saw a documentary where he said the only reason he got the position was because when they sent out the script he completely rewrote it and gave it to the executives free of charge, when "Nobody in Hollywood even lifts a pencil without getting paid.". But I just don't think he's overlytalented. I think that they could find somebody better.

Then they could actually skip all the way to the return to Hogwarts and the announcement of competition. They would have to introduce Mad-Eye and Mr. Crouch as major characters. Then the pensieve scene is crucial--as important as the fall into the diary in CoS. The competitions themselves are actually not so important to the overall plot, only to the action and appeal of the movie. They really need at least 30 minutes of screen time for the final test, the confrontation, and the discovery--if they try to cram it together in less time, they'll never pull it off. In some ways though, the plot line is much simpler than Prisoner. We know V. is laying a trap, we watch to find out how the trap is sprung and what happens: Harry worried about V, Harry unexpectedly added to competition, Dumbledore/Sirius worried about V, the competitions, and the end.

Columbus was good for the first two, in my opinion, as they are more "innocent", but, as dark as the series is getting, it was time for him to leave the franchise
Posted By: Magus Jan 14, 2005 - 09:34 am | | If I was in charge I would have hired him for the job myself, for the first one and probably the second one as well. He obviously showed great enthusiasm and wanted desperately to shoot it. He also did have that "innocent" touch that the films needed. He did good. But now it's time for him, as he did, to step aside for a more talented and able director.

I can't wait to see what they'll make of the fourth. It will be hard to trim it down to movie size. It was a longer story. I wonder if they thought of doing like the Lord of the Rings and make and extended version on DVD...
