Scifi and Fantasy Forum: Books and Book Reviews: A Bridge of Birds
A Bridge of BirdsWe have moved to new forum software and posting here is closed!
I have just read what might be my favorite fantasy-comedy book. Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. Half-way through it, I thought it was going to be another average book, with some humor added in. By the end, though, every loose end had been tied up very smoothly and impressively. I believe this book won a few awards back when it came out, but I've seen an interview with the author where he said that his publisher would never promote this book or it's sequels at all. I think that is a great travesty (for the world of books, anyway). I had not heard of this one, but read about it once, and was lucky enough to see it in a used book store while it was fresh in my mind.
Thank you, CMark- it seems as if it is the kind of book I enjoy. I'll keep my eyes open for it.
Can I just add that I agree wholeheartedly. I've even loaned it to people who didn't normally read fantasy novels and they loved it too. There's another one called Eight Skilled Gentlemen which is almost as good and brings back both Number Ten Ox and Master Li.
I also enjoyed this book. There is a lightness and speed to the humor that is a riot to follow--and very Chinese in flavor--from the names of the characters to the absurdities of bureaucratic red tape to the wild imagination of the mythical elements. nothing is sacred and everything is sacred in this irreverent little book.
I also enjoyed the two books alot. I always wondered why he didn't continue more books in the series.
