Posted By: scathach Feb 04, 2004 - 11:09 am | | Newbie here, too. But yes, i´ve read one book of Gemmel's, in fact the only one that has been translated into finnish, so.. The book is called the Legend. And i truly loved it, the best heroic fantasy i´ve ever read. I´m willing to read Gemmel in egnlish, if I manage to find it. Wanted some good tips? Well, if you haven´t read The Farseer -trilogy by Robin Hobb, you don´t know a thing about good fantasy. Also, The Liveship Traders and The Tawny Man -trilogies are amazingly great. Terry Pratchett's books are worth reading. If you´re looking humour, well, this is where you´ll find it! =) My favourites are the Reaper Man, Mort and the Wee Free Men, though all his books are awesome! ps. don´t mind my english. It may sound a bit.. strange, but i hope you understand what i´m trying to say

Welcome scathach and split an arrow with an axe liked Gemmell to begin with but his books can get a bit samey and boring after a while, are still good though. Definately agree with u scathach about Robin Hobb- am halfway through assasin series, need to locate a copy of Assassin's Quest. Would also recommend Katherine Kerr for fantasy adventure books, or if you're really up for a challenge George RR Martin's series starting with A Game of Throne's (this is really detailed and complex though so only attempt if you have lots of time) Wit and humour wise- Tom Holt books are very funny and well written, but thats all i can think of for now
Posted By: krasinda Mar 11, 2004 - 01:46 am | | if you enjoy the gemmell books cause of the quasie arthurian themes, you might like to try T H White, stephen lawhead, bernard cornwell, or marion zimmer bradley. (although i must admit that narion zimmer bradley's arthurian series tend to have a very feminine slant.)
Posted By: Aldan Mar 11, 2004 - 07:21 am | | Yes. Gemmell's "Legend" is a very enjoyable novel. I haven't read it for a few years, but now that you've reminded me of it... *Aldan starts digging through his boxes of books, then looks at just how MANY boxes he has to go through and gives up to turn back to his keyboard* I also agree with Bmat - your English is quite good. In fact it is better than that of most American people when they write (grammar to most of them is a person who visits and brings them cookies). The only thing which I noticed, and I'm not sure if it's one of your personal trademarks, or if you just didn't know: when speaking of yourself, you capitalize "I". As I said, if you have some personal reason for doing this, I understand, because I used to do the same for my own reasons.

Posted By: Windborn Mar 19, 2004 - 05:22 am | | I recommend Jim Butcher's Dresden File Series. It's pretty good. It's about the only professional wizard listed in the phone directory, and his adventures with fantastic creatures in New York or Chicago (can't remember which): vampires, faerie queens, a faerie grandmother who's out for his blood blah blah. Imagine someone living in the city who cannot have mirrors in his house because demons might attack through them, who cannot have electricity in the house because his magic disrupts ALL electrical things.' There are 5 books so far that I've found and I've read them all. I also recommend books by Chris Bunch, particularly his dragonmaster series, Paul Kearney (monarchies of god series), Robert Jordan's latest books, Raymond E. Feist's Conclave of Shadows series, R.A. Salvatore's Demonwars trilogy and Hunter's Blades trilogy, Sara Douglass' The Axis Trilogy, and it's follow-up trilogy the wayfarer's redemption, Terry Goodkind's sword of truth series, Michael Cobley's Shadowkings Trilogy, Mark Anthony's The Last Rune Series, Anselm Audley's 1st book Heresy, All Dragonlance and Forgotten Realm books , David Drake! Lord of the Isles Series, Maggie Furey's Artifacts of Power Series and Shadow League Trilogy, Elizabeth Haydon's Symphony of Ages Series, L.E. Modesitt Jr's new book 1 of the Corean Chronicles, and Margaret Weis' Stargate Cycle Series and her newest one, The Sovereign Stone Trilogy. Lol, too many. These are all fantasy books I have read recently and found most to my liking. I also like Chris Bunch's sci-fi miles vorkosigan series.

You must be a speed reader with no job (retired?), or does recently cover some/many yrs....?
Posted By: Windborn Mar 20, 2004 - 06:18 am | | Recently covers 2 years.
I recommend the Recluse series by L.E.Modesitt, Jr -- simply wonderful.
