I started reading Robert Jordan somewere in the middle, got hooked, and now I have gotten unhooked after his last book (Winter's heart). It cost me almost a hundred pounds and Absolutely nothing happened. This is a typical case of A good writer losing focus. I doubt that I will buy another Robert Jordan from the bookstores, I have seen the future of Fantasy, and his name is George R. R. Martin

Comments:

skitsofrantic - i noticed after a certain point, the punctuation really fell off. what happened? you might want to see a specialist about that. it could be a problem. also, keep in mind that when you read the dragonlance series, you will encounter many things borrowed from tolkien. qualinost = modified lothlorien. the elves are tolkienesque elves, the dwarves tolkienesque as well. think about it.

kurunmi - i don't know what motivated you to shell out 100 pounds for winters heart...or any book for that matter. that is your own fault, not jordan's. while it is true that winter's heart didnt make the most major developments (and 10 doesnt either), they do seem to play an effective role in what seems to be setting the stage for some MAJOR shiznit to go down in book 11.

we'll have to wait and see i guess.

Most of you know that Robert Jordan has a new "Wheel of Time" novel that is due out in bookstores in January 2004. It is called New Spring the novel, and we are happy to say that we will be adapting Robert Jordan's New Spring, the Novel into a graphic novel. You've been seeing some of our artwork on other adaptations in the George R.R. Martin, Tad Williams, Dragonlance, and Robert Silverberg threads and I'm sure that you have a sense of what we are capable of. Please check out the link below to see the article in Newsarama and post your thoughts, enjoy and spread the word to any Robert Jordan fans that you know :)

Here is the link with Robert Jordan's thoughts on the graphic novel adaptation, enjoy :)

Robert Jordan is a magnificent writer. In his Wheel of Time series he has 9 or 10 books i believe and while im only on the third, the books are the best i have ever read. He has definately mastered the art of writing fantasy novels. The main plot is about the young lad who has no idea he is the Dragon Reborn, the Savior of the world in the eyes of some, the Destructor of it in others. Rand Al'thor is his name. His two friends Perrin (i forget his last name lol) and Mat Cauthon ( i believe thats how you spell it) also share Rands place in the Ta' Veren (the word that describes them: means something along the lines of the world weaves itself around them, every action they do has some effect on the future of the world.) At the end of each novel (im guessing here, ive only finished two) Rand has a *final showdown* with Shai'tan (sightblinder, leafblighter, winderbringer, what ever you wanna call him)ya so along the way they..... never mind, if i try to explain it then that will only diminish the value by trying to describe it with my unworthy vocabulary :) but i STRONGLY recommend this book, it is worth the money. I invite anyone and everyone to give me their input back on the thread. thank you

Been a while since anyone posted on this topic, but i am going to try anyway.

A couple years ago, i read the WOT book up to the 9th one, then i stopped. i thought they just went nowhere. i thought they just dragged on and on, never really getting anything accomplished. I put them in a sack to take to a used book store, took them to my dad's house, and forgot and left them there. He found them, and went absolutly nuts over them. Since i am the only other one in my family who likes sci-fi and fantasy, he would talk about them to me all the time, and i pretended to know what he was talking about, but i had forgotten all of the story, except i thought it dragged.

Then i started to reread them, to humor him in a way, and know what he was going on about. This time through though, i love them!!! i looked beyond the basic story, and looked at not just character, but society development. And it is incredible. WOW!!! I mean, he really has created a new world. Different lands with their different mannerisms and cultures. and the psedo-countries too.

I could say so much, and i might start a new topic on jordan, because i would love to talk about this stuff. i have gone beyond my dad looking at the groups and lands, and now he thinks i am kinda crazy about it. So i need people to bounce this stuff off of.

But about the man hating thing. I think it looks like jordan kinda hates men, but then there is another way to look at it. The Aes Sedai are kinda junkies. They are hooked on their power, and die in a few years without it. They talk about not burning themselves out, but face it, they can't live without it. It might be their power, but it is also a weakness. they are addicts.

I also think jordan is trying to make his men not weak, but not some super hero either. Perrin is a great character, yet he is human. poor Rand is human too. And caught between being human and doing the right thing. I mean, he has to live his life knowing that doing the right thing is going to kill him.

I am only on the 9th book (again). i mean, i am just that far. i have the next one, i just haven't read it yet, but i will. i hope people will write on this again, and the new thread i might post on this.

Well, I guess that I'll have to give WoT another try. I just couldn't get into the story the first time. I'll have to try delving deeper this time, I guess.

I loved the first 7 or so books of WOT but by 8 or 9 I started getting annoyed. You read 600 pages or so and at the end of it you realise not much happened. Plus when is it going to end!?

One of my great fears is that Robert Jordan will die before finishing the series and WE WILL NEVER KNOW HOW THE STORY ENDS!

aaarrgh!! dont say that!! he MUST finish! i've read about 5, all several years ago, but i got so sick of being unable to find the next one that i have decided to wait until the series is finished before i persevere and reread the ENTIRE, COMPLETED series!!

There simply MUST be an ending, and SOON too!

Robert Jordan is in pretty good shape, and its not like he's old or anything. I wouldn't worry too much. I'm more worried about George Martin.

I think that he didn't say all that much in the last novel BECAUSE he is setting up the reader/fans for a surprise. This is only my thought, as I don't know the author personally, and have never been able to even get through his first novel... but I can understand how you feel.

Well, Aldan, perhaps this is the surprise you speak of: (From ScifiWire)

Wheel Of Time Optioned

Red Eagle Entertainment has optioned worldwide feature-film rights to Robert Jordan's 11-book fantasy series The Wheel of Time, Variety reported. Red Eagle will work on producing an adaptation of the first novel, The Eye of the World, with others to follow, the trade paper reported.

Eye of the World begins when villagers of Emond's Field are attacked by minions of a force known as the Dark One, forcing three young men to confront their destiny and begin a quest, the trade paper reported.

Red Eagle will not produce programming itself, but will seek a production partner and focus on the ancillary licensing of branded products and services, the trade paper reported.

Jordan's most recent installment was the prequel The New Spring, which bowed at number one on the New York Times best-seller list. Jordan is expected to write at least two more full-length novels to complete the series, along with two additional prequels, the trade paper reported.

Ahhh... I'm not really surprised, myself, but then, not much DOES surprise me anymore...

Oh, btw, I just found the Wheel of Time computer game used ("previously owned";) at a local EB for, like, $3. I, of course, jumped at it (and almost crushed it) and bought it. I'm figuring that if I buy that and then start to play it, then it will either pique my interest in the books, or it will get me stuck someplace so that I will want to read the novel(s) for some background.
Has anyone out there played it? I know some of you have. How closely does it follow the books, or is it just "based on the world"?

My take on him is that he could have finished the books in seven but the publisher made him extend the series. I noticed mostly in books 5 and six he added more and more characters and started introducing plot sections that were not required. When we reach the end of the series, I am going to go back and see how much series there is when you take out the parts and characters that seem added in. I bet that i will be about as thick as the first 7 or 8 books.

I have played the PC game of Wheel of Time. It is set before the novels, so consider it a kind of prequel.

It is not a bad game.

If the rumours of the movie are true, I can't wait. I have been waiting for a movie based on the WOT series to be released. I wish it would have happened sooner.

I've put my reading of this series on hold. When RJ complete the series, I will then re-start from book one.

Otherwise it's way to confusing the remember who was who doing what after 2 years since the last book.

I love WoT!

The scope of the story is absolutely immense. If youre looking for "Good Vs. Evil" look elsewhere. This book is "Good vs. evil vs good vs neutral" this book portrays a world of intrigue and deception balanced on a knife point. Jordan has created a world of depth and substance that Tolkein only dreamed of. I say this, not intending to knock on tolkein (I love tolkein). This series is about what drives humanity, for some its greed for others its doing the right thing. But regardless of who or what it is, it is NEVER easy. This series does something that most other books dont, it delves into the secret lives of almost EVERY character, it shows you a "behind the scenes" look at life in the world Jordan birthed. Of course its ominously long and complicated, nothing worth doing is ever easy. Ive read the current series twice now, and have a cousin and best friend whom read with me, somedays well sit around, smoke a doob and talk about WoT for hours. It has brought a whole new perspective to my writing as well, it taught me that no character in a story is trivial. Just like life, complications and consequences abound!

I am waiting to completely finish WoT before reading any George Martin or Terry Brooks. My friends tell me that they are both worth the read.
Who knows, maybe I'll like Martin or Brooks more than Jordan, but I have to finish the WoT and until I do Jordan is the only fantasy for me. Other than that I read alot of Sci-fi. . . currently half-way through China Mieville's Perdido Street Station (its very STRANGE).

Oh, and another thing. . .

I think that a movie based on WoT would have to be like 100hours long in order to even be a fraction as good as the books are.

Books are much better than movies, I have a vivid Imagination and I love using it to paint the pictures I'm reading about. If I were Robert Jordan I would be loathe to have WoT made into a movie, it is just not the right medium for this story.

I would rather they never did a movie on those books. However a anime series done in a serious and well conceive fashion might be a good idea. I see it maybe done with the new computers graphic...might be cool!!!

Although the last post is old I will put in my two cents

I agree with UberNeoGuy and Pat0214 that a movie would destroy the world you've built up in your imagination while reading the books - apparently the next one while come out some time this year - 2005 october time (i think) - also the pc game is based on the world where you are a Aes Sedai
