I was curious to see how many different actors have played Van Helsing in the history of cinema. This is what I came up with...

Edward Van Sloan, he played the role in the original 1931 film with Bela Logusi. I also think that he played the role in Dracula's Daughter a few years later but I could not find anything on that.

Peter Cushing, without a doubt the most famous of all. He first played the role in 1958 with Christopher Lee playing Dracula. In all I think he played the role a total of 7 or 8 times until the early 1970's in the classic Hammer Films.

Laurence Olivier, he played the role in the 1979 version with Frank Langela as Dracula.

Anthony Hopkins, in the 1992 version made by Francis Ford Coppolla and Garry Olman as the Count.

Mel Brooks, yes Mel Brooks in 1995 Dracula Dead & Loving It with Leslie Nielsen as Dracula. Not one of Mel's best movies but it's worth seeing.

Hugh Jackman, in 2004 Stephen Sommers Van Hellsing. A much more modern type of Van Hellsing. I doubt Peter Cushing would have been able to fight the same type of monsters as he did :-)

There was two actors who played Dracula on stage, in London and New York on top of Bela Logusi. One other actor played him in the 1931 Spanish version who was filmed at the same time as the English version by Universal Studios.

Anyone know if there was a Van Hellsing in Blackula? I never saw that movie so I am unsure.

Anyone can think of another one?

I know that the character himself appeared as a minor character in over 150 movies, ranging from werewolf to mummy and, of course, to vampire movies. I also know that Van Hellsing is the only one as of yet where he plays a leading role.

I don't know what actors have played him in the past, or how many have actually done so. I also have yet to see Van Hellsing. I'll let you know if I come across anything.

Do you think that he appears in 150 movies Magnus?? I never imagine that the role had been use so often.

I know that he wasn't call Van Hellsing in the German film Nosferatu in the 1920's. They could not get the rights from the Bram Stocker estate to make a Dracula movie.

Anyone know a good web page dedicated to Van Hellsing. I made a search but could not really find anything on that subject.

I actually saw it on a Van Hellsing Documentary a few months back, in preperation for the movie's release. There have been over 150 movies where he has appeared in. I don't think they counted Nosferatu if it wasn't actually him.

It was made by E!, if that helps at all. It was interesting. It goes into the origions of the monsters and their history in book, film and legend.

There's also The Adventurs of Young Van Helsing: The Lost Sceptor. Which is a Modern Day college (Maybe late Highscool, but I believe College) boy who is a descendant of Van Helsing, and gets involved in the same lifestyle.

Sindatur, that movie a little bit in the same line as what they did with Indiana Jones...

The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones
