I agree with George Lucas on the cgi side of the recent Star Wars films.

It is the perfect medium for doing what he originaly intended, and wanted to do with his idea for the SW universe.

Back when he first started the filming of star wars, all he could use was pyrotechnics and miniture models. He couldn't express fully what he wanted to get across to the audience.
Now with cgi the sky is the limit and he can create all that he wants to - in the way he wants to.
I think cgi is a blessing for the film industry.

I like CG or classic animation, too. No boundaries. But one of the cool things about modelwork and pyrotechnics is the stuff that people come up with while trying to figure out "how do I do this?" is so creative. I bet the Star Destroyers wouldn't have looked nearly as cool if they'd been conceived in CG rather than put together from model battleship parts. CG tends to be glossy rather than gritty. I like some grit in my special effects.

But I'm happy either way. It's certainly easier for the director to achieve his vision with CG. It helps make moviemaking affordable, too.

I'm straying from the topic, however.

Not all modern action sci-fi is horrible. I really enjoyed Minority Report and The Matrix, for example. But for every Minority Report there are ten like Paycheck. You just have to be able to hunt through the garbage.

Well, if the •••• Matrix trilogy hadn't been a blockbuster there wouldn't be any action scifi. Look at stuff before 1999. "Wow! Another Baldwin brother's SciFi movie!"
Now everyone says 'Alright, they want Bullet-Time, huge displays of guns, explosions, wars between good and evil, generic backstory with a nice polish and vulcan cannons!"

Aslan yeah I agree there to. For every greats cifi film there are a dozen bad ones also.

One recent terrible scifi film as far as am concerned is Equilibrium, a horrible film if youa sk me.

Have i got your attention yet?

try virtually no flashy visuals, just hardcore scifi story with interesting developments. i was worried about the child abuse story, thinking it was just aiming to stir up emotions in the viewer leading to critics mentioning it where they might not give it so much space

this is a brilliant robin williams film that has to be watched. in fact, theres nothing on tv tonight, i might go watch it again now!
