I should admit that I have faith in this remake coming out in Nov. & produced by James Cameron, but I cannot suggest strongly enough that all of you see the original first. I've heard it described as "a psychologically tense and tragic love story which happens to be set in outer space." For 1972, it's FAR ahead of it's time. A scientist/psychologist is sent to the planet Solaris to investigate bizarre activity involving the previous crew & the planet's mysterious ocean, which manifests human thoughts & memories. He meets again his once-dead suicidal wife, & from there it's the Dr. Zhivago of SF films. Considering the genre, hardly has there been anything since so equally rich in philosophical scope. Even if you can't handle foreign films (it's in Russian), you won't care. The imagery is simply amazing for it's time. Very haunting overall effect. What else can I say? Anybody seen this one already?

Honestly I hated this movie. I don't know of anybody yet who has enjoyed it. It was boring and dragged horrably. I didn't even understand any of it! The whole movie is a mystery of content, actions and anything else that people must know in order to enjoy it.

I didn't rate it either Magus, in fact I found it pretty dull.

Hyperion

It was slow, granted, but I thought it was okay. It's been awhile, now, since I've seen it. I thought it was thoughtful and emotional. Not perfectly made, but the acting was good.

I tend to have a soft spot in my heart for slower, more thoughtful sci-fi, however. It grates me that Hollywood thinks sci-fi has to be action-packed to sell. Unfortunately, in most cases they're right.

As far as slow sci-fi goes, I'd rate Solaris near Gattica, both of which would rate below THX-1138. But I think Solaris and Gattica are both worth seeing if you have the patience.

Thumbs up for Gattica, down for Solaris.

I didn't see enough of Uma Thurman in the one and saw way too much of George Clooney in the other!
