Has anyone else seen this film? Although not quite as impressive or revolutionary as reviews i read made it out to be i was still very impressed. I realise its not strictly sci-fi but it would hard to fit it i any other genre. I was particularly impressed with the ideas of too much intelligence/knowledge leading to breakdown and confusion. What was the meaning of the ending to you - madness or transcendence?

As disturbing as the movie was, I really liked it. I thought the ending, his putting a drill into his brain, wasn't really madness. It was more that he had so much intelligence that he just couldn't bear the thought that his brain contained such knowledge (the code) which could be used for either great good or great evil. So, basically, he gave himself a lobotomy for the good of the world. Also, he had spent his entire life with millions of numbers racing through his head. The mental quiet after the lobotomy must have been very welcome to him.

I really liked it too! Nice to hear that someone out there other than me has seen it, it's taken long enough to get a reply!!
unfortunatley have forgotten my password etc. so this is dave again.
Would most definately agree with you about the ending, a very poignant analogy for the modern world I think: too much knowledge and information leading to a lack of meaning, disenchantment and distress. I certainly have experienced thoughts like these.
On a lighter note have you tried playing the game in the film with the black and white pebbles, it's called 'Go', it's very old and japanese. Have tried playing computer versions but really is very hard to pick up, I think it would be best to learn from a human opponent, it's very hard to work out any sort of tactic/skills when learning from abstract rules written down and not seeing them in action. A friend of mine was making me a 'go' board a long time ago but she is very slack and lazy (not a critiscm, very understandable), a very transient person, maybe one day I will get the board and tfind an opponent. It's hard enough finsding soemone real to play chess against let alone someone who's even heard of 'go' and is prepared to teach it!!
Anyway, to anyone else reading, GO AND SEE THIS FILM, IT REALLY IS VEY GOOD AND MAKES YOU THINK, WHICH SURELY IS THE POINT !?!?
Anyway enjoy if you do and know I must really stop putting it off and retur to writing my amazingly exciting essay on Karl Marx.....Mnnnnn.

Hey, Dave. No, I have never played Go but I really want too. One of these days, in all my spare time, I will take up the hobby, lol.

I've been waiting three years to see this and amazingly, pi did not dissapoint me. I had the impression someone had scanned my brain and made the movie I would most enjoy. It was like a holy cinematic communion! I've always been interested in the fundamental patterns of nature like the fibonacci sequence, the mandlebrot, etc. Some years ago I tried writing a short novella about a character who becomes obssesed with these patterns as a way to find some order in the universe.
The gist of the story was that he thought that if he could match his 'neural patterns' with other patterns in the universe he could somehow become more snychronous with the universe and become enlightened. Of course he ends up overwhelming himself and going mad. Naturally when I saw Pi, I found the similar themes quite interesting. I think that an understanding of the ultimate 'equation' that expresses the universe, would drive me to lobotomize myself as well. Ahh the perils of being an Atheist I guess. For now I will content myself with being a hairless ape content with a universe that shall remian hidden a little longer.

"Pi" is a great movie - an original plot, unpretentious acting, music like nothing I have seen that gets the audience to UNDERSTAND the headaches the guy is going through... Very interesting indeed.

Pi is on my favorite movie list i have played go and it is extremely difficult to play after knowing the game because there are so many mathmatical ways to base your moves. when they showed the go board in the movie with the spiral on it they where actually telling you the way to be the best in this game i studied many years i found out that the main point is in front of you. you might think that the center is the key but unlike chess position that u where in is less importiant. because the game is so crucial you must have complete understanding of every goal at everytime. In go there are no opennings of mid game strats or closing strats like chess it is all to be made in your mine. it takes people new at the game 25 days to finish.

On a lighter note it is quite itresting that people dont get the nature of the saying "when i was 6 i looked up and saw the sun." he saw the heavens but what he doesnt know is that he was suposed to be the next prophet of the heavens. do u know the importance of the jews in the movie. the reason they wanted the number is to enter the heavens. If you didnt find out that his Conscience and Mind represented heaven the rabis full of good intensions and willing to sin to do represented pergatory. And the rich bussiness people with temptation and wanting to stop anyone else from getting saved is the devil.
So he was the Jusus christ of the movie. He sacraficed himself and his free passage to heaven to save others from falling in to hell or •••• nation. Do you know why the little girl is in there it is because she represents innocents and purity that he saves.

Please forgive the poor grammer and spelling i am in a hurry

hi guys.... kinda late i came into this topic but anyway...i say.. each one of ours has an interpretation of this master piece.. in my case ,i think that this movie has nothing to do with an eventual parusia or a remake of the holy bible... i think that this movie came to all of us just with the propourse of theach as to play go.... thats why i think you should go quickly to http://games.yahoo.com/games/login2?page=go
and learn how to play -_-dddd well thats no really my opinion about the movie but i dont want to share it whit a lot of strangers (no ofense) but... why the hell you should be interested in my opinion? in case you are ... im not interested in yours i only want to play go -_-d, speaking about go =D in yahoo's server
you also can choose between diferen sizes of tables(9x9,13x13 or 19x19)the one in the movie is 19x19 (i made one for myselfe =DDDD) ,and the best thing is that you play online with other noobs like me =D...if u have any question about the game just ask =D.

well cya gg go!

I was really excited to see a thread about PI... I don't remember the movie so well but I plan to go check it out now what you mention it. I might even pick up the DVD if its not too expensive. I have been obsessed with things like primes and large primes since, though.

I saw this movie so long ago...but it's starting to come back as I read these posts. I do remember that it was disturbing and not what I expected but still held my interest and that overall, I felt it was worthwhile or "a keeper".

What made the movie interesting and why after reading this thread I will probably add the DVD to my sci-fi movie library is the spirit and intensity with which the main character pursues his own personal and original search for "God" or what has alternatively been called "the undifferentiated aesthetic continuum". Such a search presupposes the existence of some sort of featureless undivided infinite omni potential field out of which everything else is derivative.

A major problem inherent to the use of language, which is a process that converts the reality of objects, events and experience into discrete words and symbols, is that whatever terms you use to attempt to define the concept of "God" it necessarily falls far short of the mark and if taken too literally will only lead to misunderstanding, confusion and contradiction.

Nevertheless common to this movie and many other sci-fi movies is the belief that there is some such field or force that interpenetrates on every level and in all ways all that is in and of this universe which is our home, as well as all other universes separate from our own and all other perhaps unknowable hierarchies of creation.

Regardless of personal beliefs, one has to admire someone who has the courage and independence to rely on his own resources and intuition in a bold attempt to communicate with that which may be the very fount of all existence.

-Vincent Vega

I have heard varying reviews on this movie, I might just have to watch it now, after recent comments in here.

Some said that unless you're a techie, then you wouldn't like it, while I have said that it's just an interesrting film no matter what your interests.
